Friday again.
Our SOTW is "A Pocketful Of Steele". (Is is just me or does that sound
dirty?!?! Grrrrrrrrrrr!!!) I'll say this now so that everyone won't remember
it by the time I post my thoughts...I liked Jackie's hair!!! (Hey, this
was the 80s...Big hair was "in"! I also had a crush on Eddie Van Halen
at the time!) Post away, ladies!!!

"... current industry
practices in that age group..." STOP IT you're killing me!!!ROFLMAO! On
to the review... wait one more HA! Okay I'm better now.
Not much in this episode, aside
from the parallel to Steele's own teen years. But would it have killed
them to give us just a little romance, I mean Pax probably had a very difficult
time deciding where to edit this! Apalling...
Otherwise, I see the bank cop is
the same one from Francis' kitchen in the Vinne and menagrie of dead turtles
episode.
I can just see PB when they brought
out the wardrobe for this one. 'Alright a casual shirt...hey what's with
the zippered pockets? Don't panic ol' boy, I'll just leave nearly all the
buttons undone.' Speaking for women everywhere ...THANK YOU!!!!
I love Laura's uncomfortable tolerance
of the jail house cat calls as she goes to bail out Steele and her absolute
delight in determining how thoroughly he was searched. But wasn't this
a reversal of roles from another episode? Or one in the future? Can't seem
to recall, but I'm sure I'd have signed up to be his jailer for that strip
search...
Laura changes from high heels to
a 2" wedge to dodge speeding cars in the street. I bet she did this quite
often but I just noticed this time. And kudo's to Steph for the fire escape
climb into Jackie's room. Reason 145, I'm not a Private eye...
The clock in the hotel lobby reads
2:45 when they go in, 2:30 in Mama's room, and 4:50 when the exit the hotel.
The budget from the overseas episodes must have forced them to let go the
continuity editor....
And finally, I wonder did Jackie
get to keep the 10 grand he blackmailed from McKenzie? Hope so.... |

| Thanks for your
post, Auburn! OUCH!!! No one's posting on this one. What gives? And who
deleted their post?!?! No fair! I hadn't read it yet! Well, I guess I'll
give it a whirl...
“A Pocketful of Steele”. Not one
of my favorite episodes, I must say…Though I found that I rather enjoyed
it this time around. Of course, there was the abhorrent lack of romance
which totally bites and keeps me from watching it habitually. (Gotta have
my romance, ya’ know.) Nonetheless, it had its pluses…
1. The Mystery. I liked this one.
It was well-written. Kept me guessing. At least this time I could concentrate
on the plot since I knew there was no kissing or foreplay to look forward
to…Though Mr. Steele is a distraction in and of himself. (Does anyone else
think that Crayola needs to create a new blue crayon called “Pierce Brosnan’s
Eyes”? O…M…G!!! They’re so distracting…and freakin’ gorgeous!!!) There
are a number of episodes I watch over and over and over again and I have
no idea what the mystery is about. LOL!
2. The Guest Stars. Yes, folks…I
liked Meeno Peluce…Long hair and all. (Though for some reason, when I watched
it this time around, I kept thinking, ‘Age him ten years, give him a mullet
and you’ve got Tony.’ There’s something about his mannerisms that makes
me flash to The Rat. Hmmmmmm…) Mama was a riot…Mr. Schwimmer was menacingly
engrossing…Larry just made me nervous as the down-on-his-luck, aging con
man…Thelma was a joy to watch as she identified Jackie by how he picked
rather than by what he looked like…All in all, not a bad one in the bunch.
3. The Clothes. Yes, yes, yes…Mr.
Steele’s suit. He always looks good in a suit. But in jeans…Oh-ho-ho, yeh-heh-hes!
The shirt (though kinda weird with the zipper pockets) opened a fair amount
(revealing his oh-so-appetizing chest) and casual jacket topped off with
cool shades? Grrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!! (His hair looked fabulous, too!!! Just
thought I’d throw that in.)
4. The Drama. I know why Pierce loved
this episode so much…Because he got to prove that he could be more than
just funny, charming and sexy. He got to “show his chops”, so to speak.
(And lovely chops they are!!!) NICE!!!
5. The Comedy. I never thought of
this as a “funny” episode…But it had its moments. The scene with Jackie’s
family. Hysterical! Poor, gullible Laura. (I would’ve been the same way.)
The jail scene. OMG!!! Never EVER thought I’d want to do strip searches
at a jail (eeeeewwwwww!), but DAMN!!! [[bigeek]] Sign me up and bring him
on!!! Oh-ho-ho, yeh-heh-hes!!!
6. The Humanity. Once again, Mr.
Steele proves what a kind heart he has. *sigh* Plus, we learn a bit more
about Remington’s past! (Always a good thing.) One of my favorite moments:
R: "I am not saving souls, Laura." L: "Not even a cheap little pickpocket's?"
R: "Com'on, he's more than that, dammit!" Great all the way around. Laura
knew exactly what Mr. Steele needed there. Also wonderful: J: "Who are
you to come in here looking like some debutante telling me that WE'VE got
a problem? Can you handle a secret, lady? I don't need you. I don't need
you, I don't need your friend." L: "It's very safe, isn't it? Not needing
anybody, nobody needing you. If you can figure out a way to go through
life like that, I'll buy your book. But for now, a man I care about cares
about you. Don't throw that away." Brilliant parallels in both instances.
Great writing.
So there you go. A good episode that
fails to achieve greatness because of the LACK OF ROMANCE!!! Let this be
a lesson to us all. (Ahem, Mr. Kern!!!) [[winkgrin]]

| Xenos- I believe
the established name is Pierce Brosnan Blue. :P
Meeno is Punky Brewster's brother.
I saw it on one of those E! True Hollywood Stories and recognized him strictly
from this Steele ep.
The great part of this episode is
that we kind of get an idea of what Steele's life might have been like
at Jackie's age.
Pierce Brosnan didn't need blue
mankini trunks to be Bond. |

| Well I was gonna
comment but it looks like you've all taken my comments all ready. LOL This
isn't one of my favs but it isn't in my bottom ten either. And I thought
Meeno Peluce did good in this one.

Oh, yeah...One thing I forgot to
write...The XenosHubby was VERY impressed when Steph shimmied up the fire
escape with such grace and ease. He couldn't believe a stunt person didn't
do it. Kudos, Steph!

| The only thing
I have to say about this episode is that it co-starred my first TV crush,
Meeno Peluce. He was on a show called Voyagers with John Erik Hexum and
it was on for only about 6 episodes or something like that in the very
early 80s. Anyway, I think it was his afro that I loved which apparently
grew bigger and bigger the more Meeno grew. Luckily by the time he was
on Remington, my tastes had matured.
He acted kind of like a brat in this
episode, not the way I think of Steele being at that age. I imagine Steele
as a mini-gentleman sipping Sprite instead of champers and trying to get
to second base. LOL |
(October 11 2007) |
|
| I remember Voyager,
I had a crush Hexum. Such a damn shame about him.
At that age, 13 or 14 Steele was
probably still living on the streets in Brixton, around the time when Daniel
probably found him. He'd be more likely to be drinking beer (if he could
afford it) and sex and threats of sex would have been beyond 2nd base.
According to Daniel he was an angry violent young man which is far more
realistic than the almost Disney-esque Jackie who may have a chip on his
shoulder but it's about the size of a pebble. That he keeps calling 31
year old Steele "Old Man" is also pushing credulity even for a teenager.
I haven't done my homework again
so I'm going from months old memories (Heh). This isn't one of my favorite
episodes but it does have it's highlights.
Laura melted like a cheap ice cream
cone. She won't reveal her client but she will finger the kid to cut a
few hours off her holding time. Boo Hiss. :P I like her talk with Jackie
when she says she cares for Mr. Steele. Of course it would be nicer if
she could realize that she too with Cannes is "throwing away" that Mr.
Steele cares for her.
Mr. Steele is much too beautiful
to go to prison where wolf whistles would not be reserved for Miss Holt.
O.o
Traveler's aid for the criminal miscreant.
In a Bowling Alley. I LOVE this! I love that Mr. Steele still knows these
things, like where to get counterfeit money, where to gamble in the back
room for high stakes, and who to go to to fence a hot car.
The best thing about this episode
-- Mr. Steele again forgets what buttons are for. :D Interesting
that post Cannes agreement he seems to have become more and more forgetful
about his buttons. Coincidence, I think not. |

| Yes, I'm EXTREMELY
late and I think all of this has been said but here it is anyway:
I read where someone on one of these
boards referred to this episode as "Pocketful of Hair". Ever since then,
that's what I think of, Jackie's hair, when I think of this episode.
Memorable Stuff
- Thelma and the "traveler's aid"
society!
- The whole family drama concocted
to allow Jackie to escape
- Go Laura! Jumping up and climbing
the fire escape in high heels.
- Schwimmer runs into a garage that
offers $2 all-day parking. Can't imagine that anywhere anymore.
Character Development
- Love how Mr. Steele's so out of
practice that he doesn't even realize his pocket's been picked not once,
but twice!
- Laura slowly realizing how Mr.
Steele sees himself in Jackie and confirming it by checking his reaction
when she calls Jackie a "cheap little pickpocket".
- Mr. Steele getting Mildred to
do his legwork (over the phone).
- Mr. Steele mentions a movie, Laura
jumps right in with the plot description. Ya gotta love it. They're a true
team.
Favorite lines
L: You know, you're positively delighted
with that treacherous little urchin.
R: Well, you must admit Laura, it's
a daring, brilliant, unexpected ploy - something I would have done.
Hair & Clothing
- I like Laura's pink blouse with
the blazer
- Mr. Steele in jeans. It's a good
thing.
Goofs, Headscratchers & Misc
- Meeno goofs a line. He says "How
many of there are you?!" instead of "How many of you are there?"
- Way to go, Laura. Pick up McKenzie's
gun, getting your fingerprints all over it.
- I know Brad Kern said Pierce liked
getting to play a side of Mr. Steele that's a bit grittier, and for an
actor I'm sure it's nice not to play the same-ol'-same-ol' every week.
I just miss the romance.
