OK...Before
I start my "critique", I have to share a story about this episode. In my
college speech class, our assignment was to write a paper about our hero.
Not wanting to do the typical "my hero is the president" crap, I decided
to do something a little different. I wrote about every day, ordinary people
who exhibit the attributes of a hero...And I totally ripped
off Michael Gleason's wonderfully written "When I invented Remington Steele,
I gave him all the qualities that I admire in a man: honesty, integrity,
compassion -- desire to help others -- " speech. Earned me an 'A'! Thank
you, Michael! (Please don't sue me for plagiarism.)
Now...On to
the episode itself...
I SO love this
one! MG is one of my favorite RS writers, I must say, and this episode
proves why. The dialog is phenomenal...It's witty, charming, beautiful,
hysterical and poignant all wrapped into one 60 minute show. I'd start
listing my favorite quotes, but I'm afraid I'd pretty much type the whole
show. So, on to another topic...
Clothes...
Remington in
a WHITE tux!!! 'Scuze me while I have a Steelegasm!!! OMG!!! Does it get
any better than that?!?! My favorite Laura outfit was the blue sweater
she was wearing in the office while she and Remington were dusting off
his "Wall of Shame" pictures. Her hair looked great there, too. She also
looked stunning in the blue nightgown. (If I had that gown and I looked
as good as she did in it, I'd never take it off!) Hated Bernice's dress...Looked
like a banana swallowed her.
Favorite Scene...
Like I said
before, SO many good moments and dialog in this episode...But if I had
to choose, it would be the "if we ever...cross that line...take that step...turn
that corner" scene. *sigh* Shows that they BOTH weren't ready to "take
that step" yet...He because of the commitment issue...She because she wanted
it to mean something more than the moment. The fact that she was so honest
with him and he didn't bolt after that was a huge turning point in their
relationship, I think. I believe it's at this point that he realizes he
WANTS to become a different/better person. That's the reason for his later
confessional to her...He's really trying. *sigh*
SO much more
to say, but I think I'll let someone else get a word in edge-wise.

Sorry I'm
late....it's been an odd weekend.
The whole Myrtle
Groggins thing is reason enough to love this episode. LOL
I agree with
Xenos, this was one of the best written episodes of the series. Great mystery,
very funny, and a big step in Laura and Remington's releationship. What
more could a viewer want. LOL
That said,
I'm still a bit confused about Dr. Bellows death. He really DID commit
suicide because he was being black mailed by Randi.....Right???
Did anyone
else notice that Murphy called Remington "it". "It's getting away from
us again Laura". LOL Murphy still doesn't recognize him as a person even,
just as an "it".
If this had
been the only appearance of Lynne Randall, I would probably have really
liked her...but all I could think of while watching her was "Who's sorry
now". Boss's wife or not, she really is a pretty good actress, IMO.
I didn't care
for the Pepto Bismol love nest. I know it was supposed to be romantic/sexy,
but to me, it looked like some one blew Pepto all over the room. LOL
I really liked
how everyone died the way they lived.....Tickled to death...choaked on
garbage...ivory to the head..ect. Laura and Remington should have known
it was Randi because her death didn't fit the pattern.
I also noticed
that the promo clip for the "there is a whole in my pillow the size of
Detroit" line was not the same clip as the one that played in the actual
episode. I wonder why? Also, was this the one that was filmed on the "Gilligan's
Island" set?? That Lagoon sure looked familiar.
And now on
to the important part of the episode....Relationship!
Lines like..."Don't
you know how much fun it would have been sneaking into one anothers rooms"
is what made waiting 4 1/2 years for the payoff WAY TOO long!!
After all the
flirting, and itching, they finally lay the foundation for what the relationship
will be about. Laura's fear of abandonment, Remington's fear of commitment,
and both of them's desire to be together.
Laura seems
to be asking him to become the Remington Steele she invented. And Remington,
seems to be thinking he might actually want to become that man. I think
it is he first time he realizes that this woman is worth waiting for, and
worth changing for. Not just as a sexual conquest, but as a person to share
his life with.
I like what
one of the writers said in the extras.....It wasn't just about getting
them together, it was about them knowing that they were meant to BE TOGETHER.
That, in a nut shell, is why I still love this show all these years later.
I could go
on...and on....and on about this, but my post is getting a bit LONG and
there will be plenty more opprotunities to discuss this in later episodes.
In closing....I
would really like to know what the "honey" thing was all about. It would
have been nice if that had turned up in later episodes.

I forgot to
mention something. Something that should probably have a thread all to
itself.
Laura's Hair.
Not just in this episode, but through out the entire series,.....or Stephanie
Zimbalist entire career for that matter. I LOVE her hair!!!
I know it's
a pretty superfical thing to love about an actress or a character, but
it's only one of many many many things I love about her and I thought it
was worth mentioning.
Much like green
eggs and ham.....
I like it in
a bun
I like it
in the sun
I like it with
a hat
I like it
near the cat
I like it up
or down
I like it
swung around
Ok, I'll stop.
This is getting silly. But I really do think she has beautiful hair, and
this episode in paticular proves my point.

Brenda...Glad
you enjoyed the episode as much as I did. What's not to love, eh? Just
two comments on what you said...
First...If
I were Laura, I would have DEFINITELY taken advantage of that bed with
the mirror above it. (But, then again, I do have a tushie fetish when it
comes to Pierce. LOL!)
Second...No
kidding about the "honey" thing! I SO want to know!!! (Laura seemed to
be quite amused by it! Hmmmmmmm!) Seems that RS is forever throwing tid-bits
out and leaving us hanging...The honey thing...The cat on the roof story...The
bullet traveling from the inside out mystery... LOL!!!
Looking forward
to more posts about this episode!

I liked "Steele
Trap" too. It had some nice moments between Laura and Remington and that
always makes it a good episode for me.
I noticed that
Laura's luggage was smaller than Remington's and yet she wears
several outfits
throughout the show which were all pretty. Xenos, I too liked that night
gown, she just looked beautiful in it, and I was surprised that she
seemed so
comfortable in wearing it in front of Remington.
I wondered
what was the purpose of saying, "I am Dr. Bellows" like about 6 times in
the beginning of the show. Did he expect someone to jump up and say "no
you are not".
There were
so many great one liners that it is impossible to pick out favorites, but
I loved the "it's beginning to resemble a honeymoon" by Remington as Laura
kept on locking herself in the bathroom.
Oh, I loved
the scenes where Remington tries to look through the peekhole in the bathroom.
Is he expecting to see a naked Laura? I thought that was sooo
cute.
Okay, someone
must know the end to the honey story. Forget the cat story and the bullet
inside the body thing, I want to know about this honey story. Because all
I can think of is x-rated and I doubt our Mr. Steele would
even think
such a thing.

Heh of course
it's X-Rated which is why we couldn't be told it on primetime network TV.
;-). And of course he would think of such a thing, though this bit
of information did not originally spring from his imagination - it was
told to him. But this is Lord Marchmaine we're talking about (see Steele
Molten) -- a man who's writing was so "depraved" he impressed the porn
shop guy. As much as Laura wanted to make him into her Remington Steele
he was still (and always) very much his own Remington Steele. Thank god
-- her imagined Steele was a bit of a prisitine goody two shoes cardboard
cut out bore and she'd have been bored to death of him as would the man
playing/becoming him and the audience.
I haven't had
a chance to re-watch this one yet (though I've seen it many times) but
hopefully will by tomorrow. It is very well written -- as well as being
funny and clever it has at least two very good relationship scenes.
I don't think
that pink nightmare of a room was suppossed to be romantic at all -- it
was a complete sex pit as befits the entire theme of the Island. And yes
Xenos -- mirrors on the ceiling were made for Mr. Steele. LOL |

Murphy is
not referring to RS as 'it' when he says, "It's getting away from us again,
Laura." He means the entire ruse of Remington Steele they've created.

Sooooo much
stuff to like in this episode. Michael does a great job propelling the
relationship forward. One of my favorites of Season One.
Memorable Stuff
- nice opening
sequence with the nurse rambling on & on, R&L can't get a word
in edgewise
- The whole
name game: Tracy vs. Myrtle. Cracks me up every time.
- Cindy serving
franks & beans on Wedgewood
- The argument
in the bedroom where she accuses him of looking for "an angle here, an
edge there". Her wanting them to have been assigned separate rooms so they
could sneak into each other's for a romantic interlude. She slams into
the bathroom, he comments "This is beginning to resemble a honeymoon".
- Rem sweetly
kissing a sleeping Laura on the head when he returns to the room after
hearing the giggling Cindy.
- First we
had the cat on the roof story, then the bullet traveling from the inside-out...now
we've got "the honey thing" - still waiting to hear about that one!
- The bedroom
discussion about his past, their future, turning the corner, crossing the
line, etc. Really, really nice stuff.
- When it
appears the killer is Dominic and the two of them leave the living room,
like the way the check both directions as they leave the room.
Character Development
- Though Laura
knows exactly what Rem is doing, she willingly goes along with him
- When L comes
out of the bathroom to find Randi "displaying" herself to R, she's jealous
in spite of herself
- Rem falls
with her to the bed and she appears to be unaffected, but when she gets
up, her body language tells another story
- Rem starting
to reveal a little of himself, but interrupted by the banging shutters
Favorite quotes
Murphy: Laura,
it's getting away from us again!
(and a few
lines later)
Rem: You know
what I admire about you Murphy?
Murphy: What?
Rem: Your
perception.
----------------
Laura: "Tracy"
it's so....shimmery
----------------
Laura: DON'T
call me Myrtle!
----------------
Rem: Are you
wearing pantyhose?
Laura: Yes,
why?
Rem: Strip.
(love her
expression upon hearing that)
-----------------
Rem: A rose
by any other name -
Murphy: Still
has thorns!
Hair &
Clothing
- Love the
fedora (of course), not so crazy about her jacket & tie
- Like Laura's
blue sweater in the initial office scene
- Bernice's
yellow dress...ugh
- Like Laura's
red dress she wears to dinner
- The beige
jumpsuit w/green & pink designs is from Elvis & The Beauty Queen
- Love Laura's
blue nightgown
- Don't care
for the pink top, but do like the necklace (Correia, no doubt) she wears
with it
Goofs, Headscratchers
& Misc
- Nice touch,
them dusting the photos
- When Cindy,
Rem & Laura are walking down the hall, Laura skips a step. Did PB smack
SZ in the rear with the suitcase?
- The lagoon
was the one from Gilligan's Island, I believe |

YES!!!! I agree
that is the difference between RS and other shows who try to make the show
turn on will they or won't they. |

I've liked
this episode since I first saw RS on A&E. I found it hysterically cute
that Remington was trying to look into the keyhole. The dialoge was good
in this one too.
I wish they
would've been more consistant with Laura's wardrobe throughout the series.
Sometimes she looked nice and other times I didn't understand what on earth
they were putting her in.
Then again
being a kid in the 80s my vision of fashion for that time is lace headbands
and jelly bangles so maybe its for the best. :P Although Laura dressing
up as Madonna could've been funny. Certainly would've been a good undercover
getup. Now someone like that could pull off Tracy. ;)
Loved the line
from Murphy about 'it' getting away from them again.
And I did give
some thought to the bullet from the inside out and did come up with one
theory. It was somehow ingested and then uningested to put it delicately?

A great episode
from Season One written by Michael Gleason. So many excellent comments
already so I'll just add a few additional thoughts.
Favorite Quotes
Loved the bit
when Remington is carrying Laura to bedroom after her "death" and he whispers
to her, "Putting on a little weight aren't we?".
Hair and clothing
The red evening
gown that Laura wore was also from the movie, Elvis And The Beauty Queen
(the scene where she sits at the piano and sings An Everlasting Love with
the King).
Goofs, Headscratchers
& Misc
- When Cindy,
Rem & Laura are walking down the hall, Laura skips a step. Did PB smack
SZ in the rear with the suitcase?
Yes, Mick it
does look like PB struck SZ in the tushie with one of the suitcases.
-Bruce Kirby
who played Michael Dominick in the episode appeared last year as Matt Dillon's
father in the Oscar winning film, Crash. |

OK...So
I'm watching Scene 25 from The Thomas Crown Affair yesterday. (I
didn't have time to watch the whole movie, so I skipped to my favorite
scene. Any guesses which it is?!?! LOL!) Anyway...As I'm watching (and
drooling), Rene Russo starts laughing exactly like Cindi Sikes did in Steele
Trap. Now I get the giggles! Sheesh!!! Did anyone else notice this
similarity?

LOL! Rene
has a considerably more throaty laugh -- or what my mother not so kindly
refers to as a cackle. :D Every time I see that scene though I can't help
but remember Rene's words regarding his thong being given it's walking
papers by the director -- "I have pictures of Pierce seared into my memory."
No wonder she's cackling -- she actually got paid for that! The injustice. |

|
LOL!
My only thoughts
to Rene Russo in that movie can be summed up by a quote from Designing
Women:
"If the sun
came out, that top came off. If the sun went in, that top came off. If
the moon came up, that top came off. I tell you, in my entire life I never
got so tired of looking at one girl's breasts." Delta Burke (coincidentally
a RS guest star)as Suzanne Sugarbaker in the episode 'Bernice's sanity
hearing'.

Hah, I know
exactly which article you're talking about, its when Pierce gets spotlighted
in People for his "sexiest man alive" award (well DUH...)
And Xenos...
call me whatever you'd like but I believe that that chapter is entitled
"sleeping with the enemy" heh...
my only hope
is that you watched that alone, because personally I find it awfully unsettling
when oh you know my mom or dad wants to watch the movie with me..
"You
lived with a man who wears white belts? Am I disappointed"
"Hey,
you know, I have had it with you guys and your "cancer" and your "emphysema"
and your "heart disease." The bottom line is smoking is cool and you know
it"

(If I were her, I would have screwed up -- no pun intended -- over and

again...and again...And then scene 17 from Live Wire!!! Oh-ho-ho yeh-heh-hes!!!
TeenSteele...Definitely
DO NOT watch that in front of your parents!!! (By the way...Are you even
