I really like
this episode, for many reasons. Chief among them is the further developement
of Laura and Remington's relationship. The whole episode seems to be sreaming
"I do the work and he takes the bows"!! Even among her own ex-co-workers,
they assume that he is the brains and she is just the assistant/unidentified
woman. I mean, these people know her and worked with her, and they still
think she is the second fiddle. Poor Laura, she can't get no respect. LOL
Although, everyone seems to really like Laura. None of them can believe
she could kill Alan, she's Laura for crying out loud. LOL
Ok, and now
from my Neeney inspired "notes". LOL
What was with
the cheesy backgroud playing while Laura and Murphy drove to Alan's?? Maybe
it was just one of those 80's moments, but man did it look fake!!
My favorite
moment of the episode was when Laura fell into her own trap of having Remington
"Lead
them, guild them, show them how it's done". Her worst nightmare, and she
had no one to blame but herself. LOL
Boy, for a
bunch of trained professionals, they all acted like a bunch of children.
They all needed a good spanking, or at least a time out. LOL
I love the
whole - running around the mansion thing. It made me wonder if they had
stolen it from "Murder by Death" or from "Clue", but since "Clue" didn't
happen until 1985, I guess it was the former. At any rate, it was very
funny.
I didn't really
understand the "Whistleing" theme music. Maybe it was just supposed to
be a "noir" thing, but I found it a bit odd.
Ok, that's
it for me. I'm really looking forward to next weeks episode. HUGE leap
in Laura & Remington's relationship!!

I could easily
list the things about this episode I really like (and there are things
I really like), but I'm going to take a different tact. I've heard some
folks say how much they love this episode. I guess I just don't get it,
so help me out here: why is this episode a favorite with some folks? I
know it won an Edgar Award for the mystery but to me, the relationship
just flatlines.

I sort of
liked this episode but not too much. So I will just mention a
few things
about it.
If you don't
want the man to attend the reunion, why leave the invitation in his top
drawer where he is sure to find it.
Brenda, you
are right about the fake scenes as Laura and Murphy drive to
Alan's house.
I had not noticed them before, but they were pretty awful.
Maybe, the
rental on the big house was expensive and they had to cut costs.
That big breakfast
that Mr. Steele is eating, who cooked it, and what there
was not enough
for the others to eat also.
Interesting
scene when Carl tells Laura about Murphy only looking at her at
the agency,
and Laura completely ignores him. She is not listening to what she does
not want to hear.
Favorite lines:
Laura: I would
kill to lose five pounds...in places you haven't seen.
Murphy: Because
it's my dusting kit when asked why he was the one getting the finger prints.
Remington:
You're fired to Murphy after hearing from him that the finger prints in
the elevator were Laura's.
Loved Laura's
green sweater and I agree with Brenda that the music was kind of spooky.
Not too pleased
with Laura's grimaces every time she is upset with Mr. Steele.
It's a good
thing that in future episodes we hardly saw these expressions, if
not, SZ would
not look as good as she does now.
Debra, this
episode won an award? Hard to believe it. In fact, for a season
one ep it
was somewhat disappointing.

"What has
it been? Four years since we left Havenhurst Detective Agency. Boy, it
doesn't seem that long does it?"
And here we have
one of the enduring mysteries of the show where timelines shift like sands
in the hour glass and never add up. Here it’s been four years since she
left Havenhurst. Laura is 26 going on 27. How long did she actually work
at Havenhurst when she got out of college? She then had her own agency
for 6 months -- when she was 22/23 – and she wondered why she had a hard
time getting clients? Forget her sex, what about her age? How many people
let alone businesses are going to hire a solo agency with a 23 yr old P.I.?
So how long before she opened R.Steele? How long was the lapse between
agencies and how long did they manage to survive being in the red?
"Imagine him,
in a room full of detectives. Ha, they'd be waiting all weekend for him
to slip up and when he did, they'd eat him alive.
And it turns out
she’s wrong. Alan Grievey might have been the only one there capable enough
to catch him out but then he fell for Steele’s best murder story so maybe
not. Speaking of which forget the cat on the roof I want to know the end
to Steele’s bullet from the inside story.
"Laura. Do
you think I'd risk embarrasing you in front of your friends by stealing
a murder from a movie? What if someone else had seen it?"
"
"You mean-"
"Uh-huh. Made
it up."
Yes he needs Laura
to help him lead them guide them show them how it’s done (LOL) but he keps
his cool when everyone else seems to be losing theirs and comes up with
two very huge clues at the end of the case. Compared to the other detectives
he's not exactly out of his depth.
After a couple
of spotty guest stars in the last couple of episodes we’re back on form.
All the actors are very good, and the actors that play Alan, Carl and Sandy
especially so. Sandy’s monologue confessional of her affair with Alan is
one of the better guest star monolgues on the show – and it’s given more
emotional heft by the reactions of those around her-- especially Steele’s
complete look of sympathy of not just what happenned to her but having
to be outed in a rather humiliating way in front of colleagues and friends.
Yes, where
did Steele get his meal from? When the kitchen is later searched there
seems to be no sign of a cook and no staff is questioned at all by any
of the detectives. Steele might very well have made his own – he’s certainly
capable and of course it’s one of his defining characteristics that nothing
gets in the way of his meals – or at least thinking about having meals.
;) More seriously it rings true that those who’ve gone hungry rarely pass
up a meal.
"I have known
Laura Holt …I don't what even to think how long I've known Laura Holt.
And I can say, without fear of repudiation that this woman, is incapable
of any foul play against Alan Grievey or anyone else. Aren't you?"
LOL!!! He’s of
course known her only a couple of months and well one never knows do one?
Love the Murphy,
you’re fired line and then then Murphy telling Bernice Steele’s murder
story with appropriate panache.
My favorite
line though is when Steele wishes Carl and Donald in yet another interminable
fight would just shoot one another and get it over with.
"This is getting
very boring. Have Murphy give one of them the gun and be done with it"
This has a very
good mystery at it’s core and it’s easily understandable why this episode
won an Edgar Award. |

Excellent
comments as usual from our insightful SteelePeeps. Some little points:
Costumes:
First of all,
who noticed that MURPHY also has a great chest? What a delightful short
robe they put him in! Hello! What's YOUR name?
Then of course,
our Mr. Steele strolls up in his CRAVAT again. LOL.
Love, Love,
Love Laura's nightgown and beautiful soft hair. I didn't care for that
teal sweater with the mutton sleeves they put her in for the last scenes.
I also didn't care for the purple schoolmarm blouse that she wore the first
night there with her hair up.
I DIDN't like
that "whistling-mystery" theme in this episode.
I did like
how the music was handled in this scene :
Laura: Now,
the only way this would ever work would be if there was somebody on the
outside, somebody with no axe to grind. Didn't know Alan, somebody we could
trust. Somebody-"
Murphy puts
a hand on her shoulder to stop her.
Here they play a snippet of "Steele's
Theme" so we all know who she's talking about. She realizes she's gone
too far. "Forget that last thought-."
Murphy: "Please,"
I love the
ending, where Steele kisses Laura in the hall, telling her that she "shone
brilliantly". From one professional to another... For all his lusting after
Laura, Steele also admires this woman's brains...something Laura probably
hasn't experienced much in her life.

Sorry, ladies.
Gotta be honest with you. I didn't get to watch this episode. *ducking*
Between the Christmas chaos and my "chat assignment" (re-writing Steele
Trying), I haven't had a chance to breathe let alone watch In The Steele
Of The Night. But I'll post a few thoughts from prior viewings...
First...Zinger,
you kill me! Yes, Murphy DOES look good in a robe. I bet he sleeps nekked!
Grrrrrrrr!!!
Second...I
agree with Debra. Hated the fact that we got no romance. It's my biggest
complaint about this episode.
Third...I found
that I really enjoyed the mystery (which is surprising because I usually
don't really care all that much about the mystery...it's all about the
romance, baby!).
Fourth...Loved
the characters -- as childish and unlikable as they were. I kept changing
my mind as to who I wanted the killer to be. LOL! I think it was Brenda
who said they needed a good spanking or a time out. I agree!
Fifth...Favorite
line -- Steele to Murph: You're fired.
That's all
I can remember off-hand. Hope your Christmas was wonderful and meaningful!

Even when

Other great
little moments.
The wink Steele
gives Laura when he says two such bright people should have no trouble
fooling that group. How could she resist? ;-)
After Laura
remarks on the amused smirk on Steele's face after they all run up to the
room
"And you thought
I'd embarrass you? ..."
"They don't
know you."
"Their loss."
LOL! Laura
may doubt Steele's abilities but he doesn't doubt his own -- especially
not in charming, controlling and fooling people.
In Donald describing
how he worked with Alan -- him doing the legwork and Alan schmoozing the
clients etc and how he loved it and they were a great team -- another paralleling
of the Laura/Steele relationship.
Also, I love
Steele's black turtleneck suit look. It combines the best of both worlds.
He also has two very lovely three piece grey suits and appropriate ties.
The cravat and monogramed "S" robe though -- LOL!!!!!!! I like the color
and texture of Laura's sweater -- just not the shoulder pads. I really
like her navy pinstripe suit at the end but that silly flouncy tie should
have been tossed. |

Hey, don't
blame me, Debra! I wasn't even THERE when they decided I was going to rewrite
it. I think it's a perfect episode as is...But they wanted me to write
it as if Rita never showed up at the Top of the Mark. I thought about changing
it by having Laura and Remington dance to songs by the Violent Femmes.
LOL! (Sorry, I don't even know what the Violent Femmes sing...but there
name is so preposterous sounding. Just thought I'd throw that in there.)
Anyway, I don't think you'd like my rewrite. (Consider yourself warned,
Debra!)

I haven't
read everyone else's posts, so forgive me if there is some duplication...
Memorable Stuff
- Rem's "best
murder" and Laura's ("I've had too much to drink") and Murphy's ("I haven't
had enough to drink") reactions
- Rem winking
at Laura while trying to convince her they can fool the other detectives
for the weekend
- It's A Mad,
Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World-type chase sequence, usually going up the stairs
- Rem's enthusiasm
& certainty that the fingerprint Murphy found would reveal the killer
- Cracked
up when Rem hung around, checking Alan's suits to see if they might fit
him
Character Development
- Once again
a man is interested in Laura, but she's totally clueless about it
- I believe
this is the first time we see Rem's aversion to climbing stairs
- It's been
years since she was with most of these people, but when it gets down to
solving the mystery, they all seem to defer to Laura, even though she's
the youngest
Favorite quotes
- Rem (on Carl
fighting again): "This is getting very boring. Have Murphy give one of
them the gun and be done with it."
Hair &
Clothing
- I don't particularly
care for Laura's purple blouse or her hair up
- Rem looks
great in the black turtleneck & sportcoat

color of the dark turquoise sweater on Laura, but I'm not crazy about the

- Lousy graphics
on the "drive" to Alan's
- Can one
*really* make that much money as a PI?
- Rem came
into the foyer and dropped off his luggage, but didn't take it upstairs

- That may
be the longest belt I've ever seen on a bathrobe

not convinced Alan could tie the knot tight enough to break his neck, yet
loose enough it would come undone (instead of breaking the belt) as the

This is
the one thing that always bugs me about this show!!! I think this was a
well put together show except for that part. I wonder how much discussion
there was about whether that was believable.
When I watched
this episode I was reminded once again that it wasn't as bad as I always
think it will be! I have such bias against certain shows and I often forget
that they aren't as bad as I thought.

LOL! Seemed
too redundant to merely say Bring Back Pierce. Needless to say have no
interest in seeing Casino Royale. The producers were so dumb. I guess they
didn't know that Pierce has a slew of female fans in the younger age bracket
that they were trying to reach with Craig.
Heck, I was
even rooting for the guy from Charmed and Nip/Tuck over Craig at least
he has a following.

Maybe. But
I think if she was in that role, everyone would think its RS: The Movie
under another name. Which I'm not opposed to but I have issues with the
whole turning great shows into bad movies.
I did read
on some site that Pierce had signed on to do a movie called Spy vs. Stu
with him playing the spy. Its supposed to be a comedy about a boyfriend
and girlfriend who go on vacation at a relationship crossroads and Pierce
is competing against the guy (Stu I guess) to win the girl's affection.
I know who'd I'd pick. :P
